Google and News Corp sign global multi-year licensing deal – POLITICO


Tech giant Google and Murdoch-owned media conglomerate News Corp on Wednesday announced a three-year licensing agreement, ending years of dispute over payment for news content.

“The landmark three-year agreement also includes the development of a subscription platform, the sharing of ad revenue via Google’s ad technology services, the cultivation of audio journalism and meaningful investments in innovative video journalism by YouTube,” News Corp said in a statement.

Google and Facebook have been at odds with press publishers for years in Europe and more recently in Australia over payment for news. Google recently announced a series of agreements with media companies in countries including France, Germany and the U.K., signaling a truce of sorts with major press publishers such as Le Monde and the Financial Times.

The announcement comes amid renewed tensions in Australia — the home country of News Corp’s founding family, the Murdochs — as lawmakers are finalizing new rules that will require Google and Facebook to pay local newspapers.

A number of News Corp publications will join Google News Showcase, the tech giant’s news product, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post in the U.S., and the Times, the Sunday Times and the Sun in the U.K. In Australia, media companies such as the Australian, and Sky News will be included in Google’s product.

“Particular thanks are certainly due to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Rod Sims and his able team, along with the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, who have stood firm for their country and for journalism,” said News Corp’s chief executive Robert Thomson, who also thanked Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Don Harrison, Google’s president for global partnerships, said that News Showcase now signed deals with over 500 publications around the world.

“We hope to announce even more partnerships soon,” he added.
